MANCHESTER—EcoMovement in Portsmouth and Ultra Geothermal in Barrington each received one of Business NH Magazine's 2011 Lean & Green Awards.
EcoMovement won in the newly created Innovator category. The company received the Innovation award for its compost-collection service, which helps Seacoast businesses eliminate waste.
Ultra Geothermal, which won a Green Process award in the small company category for businesses with fewer than 50 employees, demonstrated that, by developing sustainable internal operations, they could save on energy use and costs.
The winner in the medium company category (51-125 employees) was Wirebelt Company of America in Londonderry, and the large company Green Process award winner with more than 125 employees was The Duprey Companies in Concord. Two other New Hampshire businesses were chosen as leaders for implementing practices that are both eco-friendly and good for the bottom line in Business NH Magazine's fourth annual Lean & Green competition.
The Green Building award, given for a facility that incorporates sustainability in its design, construction and future operations, while demonstrating savings and efficiency, went to Plymouth State University for its new Ice Arena and Welcome Center. Among deploying other environmental initiatives, the new complex uses a geothermal heat pump to heat and cool the facility.
The Green Product award winner was New England Forest Products in Greenfield for creating a system that mills, dries and planes logs virtually waste free.
Award winners will be honored at a Lean & Green Awards reception and breakfast at The Portsmouth Harbor Events and Conference Center, the first LEED-certified events center in NH, from 8 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 20. The breakfast will include a keynote address by Former Ambassador and Congressman Dick Swett, co-founder and CEO of Climate PROSPERITY Enterprise Solution. He will discuss how innovation can improve energy efficiency and affordability worldwide.
Winners were selected from a range of applicants by a panel of independent judges.
The Lean & Green Awards Breakfast is hosted by Business NH Magazine, and sponsored by GT Solar. The cost to attend is $30, and guests may register online at www.eventsNH.com or by calling 603.626.6354.
